V3 Strategic Business Planning

Peter F. Drucker, the father of modern day business management, said “Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things”.

V3 Strategic Business Planning is a systematic process designed to assist your company in the migration from a technician style operation into an entrepreneurial style operation where growth is achieved by “knowing” and “doing” the right things.

V3 Strategic Business Planning Process

At Emerald we use a systematic three-step process to help companies grow organically, in other words we do it without expensive artificial stimulation such as:
  • Push marketing ad campaigns
  • Computer Software, or new layers of process, procedure and structure, or
  • Adding staff; in fact our system reduces decision makers workloads
V3 is about making what is important to you important to your employees, customers and stakeholders. Unlike the expensive consultants big business hires, Emerald comes along side the Cheif Executive and collaberates on business growth issues utilizing the V3 Strategic Planning System to guide the growth process. More . . .

The Emerald Three Step Process

1) We stimulate organic growth by uncovering a company’s true strengths:
The reason we do that is because leveraging a companies strengths is the only way to get leveraged results, in other words we want to multiply the owners strengths and passions by infusing his or her DNA into the company instead of confusing things by adding each employees personal DNA, (their agenda) into the mix.
2) We then identify the right things to do at all levels of your business:
Because leadership is all about doing the right things, so we have developed a guidance system, which uses the owners DNA. This guidance system in turn identifies the right things to do at every level of the business.
3) Once the right things are identified, employees and stakeholders can be realigned and focused on producing the right results for customers:
Because the only things that matter in the end are results in your customer’s world.

Taking Your Company to the Next Level

V3 Strategic Business Planning is an “organic” process entrepreneurs employ to achieve highly effective results. The type of results you can expect to see include:

  • Multiplication of the entrepreneur and other knowledge workers, not simply addition
  • Organic growth, organic in that the organization systematically progresses from a company where its all about things being done right (management), to a company where the right things are being done (leadership.)
  • Gravity or pull marketing techniques replace expensive push style marketing
  • A movement of focus from internal quantification, (it is all about how and what we do) to perceptive qualification outside the organism, (it is all about what is going on in our customers world.)
  • Alignment of individual objectives to the entrepreneurs corporate objectives and assignment of metrics and measurements to assure alignment takes place
  • Knowledge workers developing ideas and strategies, which are in the context of the strategic business plan
  • Expands the envelop of each knowledge worker to include the strategic objective
  • Magnifies the strategies, tactics and planning process that will bring the greatest amount of growth with the lowest cost of entry

Stages of Growth

Most companies typically go through three phases of growth:

The Technician Stage - Technicians are about management, the owner “owns” his job, (typically they achieve sales of up to ten million per year.)

The Strategic Stage - Entrepreneurs are about doing “the right things,” multiplying effectiveness through strategic business planning, (typically they achieve sales of up to seventy five to one hundred million per year.)

The Structured Stage  - The CEO is all about growing through the implementation of process, procedure and methodology, (unlimited growth.)

Although this is the common growth process it is not the most desirable. Instead of going through the brutal technician stage, a young company should skip right to the strategic stage. However most companies start out in the technician stage and attempt to jump directly to the structured stage. This order of development keeps small companies small because they never receive the advantages of the strategic stage where talent is developed, including the entrepreneur, and affordable organic growth can take place. As the company grows it should move toward the Structured stage as company disciplines increase and knowledge workers become affordable.

Why Small Companies Stay Small

Owners start in the technician stage
Jump right to:
The structured stage
Never getting to:
The strategic stage

Growth Stages at a Glance

Technician Stage Strategic Stage Structured Stage
  • Owners start as technicians
  • Restricted by their own personal leadership capacity
  • Use brute force to get things done right
  • Often becoming their own worst taskmaster.
  • Grow to their leadership lid
  • Strategic planning is used to determine what the "right things" are
  • Multiplies the founders passions and motivations
  • Develops company talent
  • Employs organic growth methods
  • Develops gravity style marketing techniques
  • A strategic plan assures you are working on the right things for the right reasons
  • Builds on the strategic stage through implementation of process, procedure and methodology
  • Very costly
  • Requires high levels of discipline not found in smaller companies
  • Requires specialized knowledge workers
  • Usually unsustainable if not proceeded by the strategic stage of growth
  • Successfully implemented by larger companies

How the V3 Strategic Business Planning Process Works

Strategic Business Planning Overview

V3 Strategic Business Planning is an “organic” process entrepreneurs employ to achieve highly effective results. More . . .

The V3 process is broken up into three distinct phases. Each phase builds upon the prior phase in the same way a novel develops a plot. The three phases are:

In the V1 phase of the strategic planning process the foundation of the organization is discovered and developed. This phase typically takes four weeks. more info

The V2 phase provides the structure of the enterprise in the form of strategy, tactics and planning built upon the foundational principles developed in the V1 Vision phase. This phase typically takes eight weeks. more info

In the V3 phase the foundational principles developed in V1 and the strategic planning of V2 are communicated to and implemented within the rest of the organization, customers, vendors and stakeholders. This phase typically takes six to nine months. more info
